Its economy has stagnated for years due to lack of arable land as well as the skyrocketing growth in population. As such, the economy of Egypt is greatly hinged to its historic philosophies and policies. The economy of Egypt was highly centralized under the reign of President Gamal Abdel Nasser. A number of factors that resulted in 1990s such as IMF arrangements as well as external debt relief due to its participation in Gulf war helped the country to boost its macroeconomic performance. In addition, from the year 2000, the country has put in place structural reforms such as monetary, fiscal policies, new business legislations, and privatizations, which have seen the economy shift to a market-oriented economy, coupled with increased foreign direct investment. The policies and reforms have strengthened the annual economic growth rate to an average of 5% per year, though the gain from economic growth has failed to trickle down. As such, the population is faced with high rates of underemployment and unemployment. As a result, early this year youths went to the streets protesting for political freedoms, a zero-tolerance to corruption, and improved standards of living. This forced President Husni Mubarak to forego the presidencyi. The ancie nt economy of Egypt was termed as a command economy; however such a definition worked less as expected. The economy experienced a hallmark of bureaucracy that resulted in a certain class controlling or monitoring a considerable amount of activity. State officials performed tasks such as reassigning and redistribution of land, assessment of expected crops, collection of taxes, as well as storage and redistribution of the produce. The redistribution and storage were done locally, and during periods of shortfall, regional facilities supplied produce. The Egyptian economy has been stable averaging between 4-5% annually. The continuous growth is attributed to certain developments that the economy embarked on, allowing the private and public sector participation. In the period, 1952- 1966, the major development was import substitution and nationalization.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! However, the presence of nationalization erodes the importance of private sector. Additionally, the presence of inter-war, during 1967- 1973 affected the economic performance adversely, thus limiting the public sector import substitution role. During the openness Euphoria period of 1974 to 1982, the economy introduced policies that encourage Arab together with foreign investment through liberalization of trade as well as payment coupled with a number of incentives. As such, the economy recorded good performance, but it proved unsustainable and the growth accordingly scaled back. The economy faced an external debt crisis during the period, 1982- 1990, which affected economic performance adversely. Furthermore, the period, 1991 ââ¬â 2007, is regarded as reform era, and the economy was forced to introduce reform policies to meet lenders and donors as well as international institutions terms. The reforms also focused on improvement of the private sector role on all economic sectors. Under the comprehensive reform era initiated in 1991, the economy of Egypt has reduced subsidies, cut taxes, reduced inflation, and relaxed a number of price controls, as well as liberating trade and investment partially. The public sector has limited dominance over heavy manufacturing industries; this has enhanced private sector opportunities. The private sector dominates agriculture, non-financial services, retail trades, domestic wholesale and construction. As such, the economy has recorded a steady growth in GDP, as well as the growth rate. In addition, the economy has managed to tame inflation from a double digit figure to a single digit figure. Economic philosophies in Egypt Most Egyptians embrace an economic system that ensures fair distribution of resources, free from corrup tion as well as encourage participation of the private and public enterprises. Major economists in Egypt The major economists that have influenced the economic philosophies in Egypt include Professor Galal Amin, Samir Amin, Dr. Ahmed Elhaggar, and Omar Samra.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Egyptian Economy specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Important economic event The major economic event in the Egyptian history is economic liberalization reforms. Since the occurrence of this event, has seen an improvement in economic performance for the country. As such, the economy shifted its concentration from import substitution policies to export oriented policies, this yield an economy that is the private sector reliant. Additionally, the rooted transformation has resulting to a modern economy that is well-known as the fastest growing among the emerging markets. As such, there has been growth in all sectors of the economy coupled with large inflows of Foreign Direct Investment. The reforms have had a positive effect on the economic performance of the economy, with a proved sustain growth in the futureii. Economic policy in Egypt An economic system that serves the interest of all the interest groups is applauded. In this case, a hybrid system will serve this purpose best. The components of such a system are that it provides the private sector and public (government) with the opportunity to equally control part of the natural resources. These will ensure that the different opinions in the society are well balanced. In addition, the system should be one, which the government plays an important role in providing the necessary solutions and strategies of solving the problems facing the society. The system, as well, will ensure an integration of both the private sector and government units in the production of various goods and services to amicably solve the issues prevailing in a society. The government cannot solely provide quality and affordable goods and services that are equitably distributed among the members of the society. For instance, the government cannot provide quality health and education facilities to all members of the societyiii. When the resources and production is shared between the government and the private sector, the government will have surplus resources that can be used in providing services such as health, education, infrastructure, legal, and military defense to the society. The system should also have components such as, the government ability to take precedence in any decisions that move around quantity of goods to be produced. The government is responsible in making final decisions whenever there is an issue that brings contention, and the two parties are not in a position to strike a balance. The private sector contribution in the economy should be geared towards the achievement of objectives that adds to equitable and fair distribution of available re sources. The resources should be utilized in a manner that will consider those of future generation. The utilization of the resources should be socially oriented.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Some of these trends include; democratization, significant shift to market economies as well as the revival of cultural and ethnic politics. Democracy is taking the center stage in political arena of the Egyptian economy, with economies engaging in free, regular and fair elections. Democracy has nurtured civil liberties like freedom of speech, assembly and belief, neutrality in legal aspects, civilian control of the military, presence of civil societies that provides individuals with opportunities to own and operate their property as well as a rule of law that ensure equal opportunities for all the citizens in an economy. The resulting competition that arise when an economy facilitates the commitment of the private and public sectors of the economy has influenced the shift by the Egyptian economy to a market system. The economy of Egypt has moved to system s that foster success and recently a term known as marketization has been adopted by the current economy. Marketization describes a re-creation in the economy where labour, goods, services and property are all allowed to function in a market that is competitive environment to determine their price. The move has seen privatization of state owned property, where the government decides to sell some property they own to private individualsiv. Fragmentations that exist among the members of the society play an important role in determining and shaping politics in the world. Nationalism is on its diving mode due to the increasing globalization. The revival of cultural and ethical conflicts can hamper the system prevailing in an economy. This is because nations that have varying ideologies and socioeconomic differences may lead to a shift in economic system from a market economy to a command economy. How history shaped Egyptian economy and factors influencing it When an economy embraces a p articular economic system, there is some degree of success. The success of an economy is measured in what is termed as economic progress. The main indicators of economic progress include; equal distribution of resources, low levels of poverty, low levels of illiteracy, life expectancy rate improvement, improved agriculture, as well as equitable access of opportunities. As such, the Egyptian economy was influenced by the following internal factors during the recent revolution. A transitional government has necessitated a shift to an economy that is changing from a command economy to a free enterprise. This kind of economies went through economic liberation, in this sense the economy prices are set by the market forces as opposed to the central planning authority setting prices. In addition, there are no trade barriers; a financial sector is created as well as privatization of resources and enterprises that are owned by government. Transition process exhibits some of the following fea tures creation of institutions that are privately owned, the role of the government changes among others. For transition to occur there must be a complete restructuring of institutions that are state-owned from being providers, but enablers of growth with the private sector playing the part of an engine to realize that growthv. The other factor that has had weight on the Egyptian economy is reform on, it mean to change or put something into a better condition or form. Therefore, reforms facilitate and enhance transition to take place in an economy. The radicals will use their need for reforms to seek for an improved system in the economy. Reforms can be in different sectors of the economy and there main focus is to promote better living standards for the members of the society. In conclusion, Egyptian economy has traversed through difficult circumstances in the past; however, its economic performance is currently doing well, as indicated by the economy ability to meet its macroecono mic objectives. Brubaker
Treveon Albert Dec 1, 2011 Brubakerââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Reaction paper ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Brubaker, movie of the 1980ââ¬â¢s is an earnest, right minded, consistently unsurprising movie about a penologist named brubaker (Robert Redford), who sets out to reform a single corrupt prison and finds himself bucking the system, including the state administration that appointed him to his job. When the new warden comes in disguised as an inmate, he sees first hand all the corruption and scams the guards and prison officials are running. When he reveals himself, and starts to implement reforms to stop the corruption, the local community business, which had been benefiting from the scams, fights back, and the corrupt southern prison system, starts making political trouble for the new warden. As soon as brubaker identifies himself and takes command of Wakefield to begin his reform program, the film loses all pensions and becomes, instead, a predictable inventory of the problems faced by all reformers who, like brubaker, refuse to compromise. Based on the rebound of the movie, personally I think Robert Redford is a very courageous man and will overcome every obstacle in his way to be successful. Perhaps the personal view that brubaker has on starting the reform program is kind of a false approach because no one is on his side, and the people that are on his side canââ¬â¢t do anything to help him. Motivationally Lillian, the lady that is in the system believes in Mr. Brubaker canââ¬â¢t betray the state administration. To make a change brubaker would of been mostly successful by getting in the system. I was also influenced that this is kind of a life lesson. While trying to make a change always have resources that back you up and get people on your side with power and people that have a voice in the society Mr. Brubaker was living in. It is very noticeable that brubaker was out numbered. Without sustaining a change brubaker may have made a change but it wasnââ¬â¢t a process in the making, it was an

Deepwater Horizon explosion (April 2010) -Transocean Company Essay
Deepwater Horizon explosion (April 2010) -Transocean Company - Essay Example This resulted to the loss of about five billion oil barrels through spillage but luckily, the situation was contained in 15th of July 2010. The discharge of crude oil had many negative effects such as damaging fisheries and their habitats as well as disrupting the economy (Guttry, 291). The oil spill, which is termed as the largest in the history of America, resulted to the damage of property worth forty billion US dollars. Since the damage was so big, it attracted the presidentââ¬â¢s attention where he responded by appointing a commission to inquire the causes of the spill (Guttry, 291). Reports state that even after the several response actions taken to control the impacts of explosion, the well in the Gulf of Mexico is still leaking. Although the estimated leaking rate is three million liters per day, some scientists argue that it is higher. The restriction by the government for scientists to establish the effects of the spill has raised ethical issues of government providing i nformation to the public. Ethical questions that were raised concerned the effect that the spill had on the eco system for example, the seabirds could be poisoned. In terms of legal, it was clear that the wild animals did not have any form of legal protection after the oil spill. Even though the major goal of any business is to make profit, it also has the right of making sure that its actions conform to the expectations of the society in terms of law and ethical custom (Halbert, 11). The Transocean Company should also put in place a number of safety measures that protects the environment in the event of fire or oil spill. After the explosion, company was also unable to pay dividends to the shareholders and many investors lost trust in the company during the year 2011 (Halbert, 13). The tourism business of Florida was affected negatively and the repair measures by the company could not restore the tourist attraction sceneries damaged by the oil spill (Halbert, 17). The companyââ¬â ¢s reputation was also damaged to the potential investors and to the society when they realized that the operations of the company were not inclined towards ensuring safety to its workers and the environment. After the explosion, the US president issued a drilling moratorium to regulate the drilling operations. The Energy National Board, which is located in Canada, also made it mandatory that all the drilling companies should produce their set of defined safety measures as a process of controlling oil spill damages. Moreover, the National Contingency plan (NCP) was enforced whose role is to provide the federal actions in response to an oil spill (Hagerty, 07). The response action could be the demand of the company responsible for oil spill to compensate the affected parties. Since the disaster of oil spill was one of the greatest in the US history, the event attracted a number of responses and reactions from the government, private companies, and Non-profit making organizations. As required by the government, the Transocean committed itself to pay twenty billion US dollars as a way of settling the claims resulting from the damages caused by oil spill. The major damages caused by the oil spill were on property, physical injuries and even death of the workers (Guttry 293). It is therefore evident that the drilling operations in deep water are very risky and the government as well as the industry should make safety of the workers

SHORT BIOGRAPHY HISTORY - Essay Example Furthermore, living near the borders must have accentuated his ââ¬Å"differenceâ⬠from the dominant white class. Nevertheless, it could be that because of his difference that he enjoyed life from another perspective. In ââ¬Å"The Secret Lion,â⬠Rà os shows that human nature and nature nurtured his intellectual, social, and emotional development as a biracial adolescent. Human natureââ¬â¢s tendency to seek for freedom and opportunity dominated Rà osââ¬â¢ teenage life. When he and his friend Sergio found a ââ¬Å"cannonball,â⬠they called it a ââ¬Å"lionâ⬠(Rà os par. 1). The title says it is a secret lion, because they told no one of this ââ¬Å"treasureâ⬠that they found. This lion represents freedom and opportunities. It allowed Alberto and Sergio the freedom to own something no one can take away from them. Being twelve years old, they know that adults will only confiscate their discovery. Rà os says: ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the way it works with little kidsâ⬠¦Junior high kids tooâ⬠(6). Adults are shown as thieves of innocent happiness. It is up to Alberto to use his human nature to protect what he thinks is his. So they take this cannon ball and hide it and never tell anyone about it, especially adults. The ââ¬Å"lionâ⬠also stands for something mystically strong and perfect. Having this ball in their poss ession gives them the opportunity to feel something ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠in their lives. It is round and therefore ââ¬Å"perfect and it spreads perfection to its beholders (5). It is ââ¬Å"heavyâ⬠and they feel its importance. If they have something important, then they too are important. They do not have to feel smaller, as some minorities do in dominant white cultures. They can be round and perfect; they can be special like this lion. When Alberto says that this ball changed them, he implies that it made them ââ¬Å"roarâ⬠(1). They have found a symbol of empowerment. A cannon ball explodes. It has inert power that is waiting to be released. Alberto must have felt this lion is him

Comparing Light and Growth in A Raisin in the Sun and Death of a Salesm
Light and Growth in A Raisin in the Sun and Death of a Salesman. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã In A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, both authors use motifs of light and growth within their settings to convey messages about the intrinsic values and potentiality of their characters. A Raisin in the Sun begins with a faint little light, filtering through the kitchen window. It's not much of a light, but it is successfully kindled by Lena Younger to keep her little plant alive and to help sow the seed of human dignity in her children. In Death of a Salesman, the physical light is blocked by the encroaching concrete jungle of New York City and the spiritual light is extinguished by Willy Loman's misguided, illusionary values. Willy and his family are trapped in the tiny shadow cast by his giant illusions and nothing grows in their world. Ã The opening description of the setting in A Raisin in the Sun states, "The single window for these 'two' rooms is located in the kitchen area. The sole natural light the family may enjoy in the course of a day is only that which fights its way through this little window." This window provides a view to the outside world which Walter Younger seeks to tame. Walter looks out of this window as he smokes his cigarette and comments on the people "running and racing to work." Lena Younger has what is described as a "feeble little plant growing doggedly in a small pot on the windowsill." She worries that "if this little old plant don't get more sun than it's been getting it ain't never going to see spring again." ( Hansberry, 856 ) The light from the window feeds the dogged little plant which Lena says "expresses me." Soft Drinks Sales New Strategies
Sales of soft drinks declined in the US in 2006 for the first time in more than two decades. Many beverages manufacturers became successful in the past and they are still at the top, but they can lose their power unless they do something to reverse the trend. In this article weââ¬â¢ll try to find new ways to help soft drinks manufacturers to face their biggest challenge of the century. To begin with, it would be a good idea to follow a stretching marketing strategy by producing a new line of soft drinks which would have been positioned as healthy and not fattening. Many companies introduced new products of the same line less fattening such as Fanta Zero or Pepsi Light, but consumers identify the brands of these products with fat and unhealthy drinks. However, if these manufacturers created new brands with names like Bio or Nature, a specific market segment would be directly targeted and sales would stop their decline. In addition, soft drinks companies could follow a different promotion strategy so that their products would look more fashionable and more modern. By doing this, companies would compensate their sales decrease in one segment by increasing their market share in another one. New consumers would be the ones who drink something while they are in bars or discos and new competitors would be alcohol drinks companies. This promotion strategy could consist of advertisements which relate soft drinks with nightlife with new slogans like ââ¬Å"Welcome to the Coke side of nightâ⬠. Furthermore, product placement in James Bond movies would be a great idea. If Bond changed its Martini for a coke many people would start to see soft drinks with different eyes. To conclude, we should remember that classic soft drinks market is still profitable and new strategies should try to avoid damaging classic products image. Also itââ¬â¢s necessary to point out that soft drink manufacturers will never be as powerful as they were before as long as consumers are demanding everyday more sophisticated and concrete products.
